Day 36: More VSA Stuff

Long post cuz it's SATURDAY.

VSA seems to have a ton of things to do every day this week, and I’ve already gone to a handful of them. I decided that today, I would spend most of my day with them and then tomorrow, I’ll buckle down and haul myself up in my room and study.
I spent the morning and part of the afternoon with Diana and Vickie from the Cabinet along with four other VSA interns. They explained our role as interns and gave us a bit of insight into each cabinet position because later, we will shadow two of the members. I arrived a little late, and apparently I missed my cousin, Alex, who was in Berkeley for a thing for HIS school’s VSA in a room practically next door. Fancy that.

Later around 7:30, I went to see a movie called “Somewhere In Between” with CORE (the Culture Show team, if you don’t remember). It was about the lives of four Chinese adoptees scattered in different parts of America. Overall, I thought it was a pretty good documentary. Without a doubt, it was touching and I teared up a few times, but it seemed to skim over the hardships I imagine adoptees go through. It didn’t show too much about the parents, either.

And speaking of parents, while I was waiting for Jason to pick me up at Unit 1, something caught my attention. There were two girls and an older woman—probably in her late 40s to early 50s—briskly walked past. The older woman began speaking Chinese and then suddenly, one of the girls snapped, “Stop talking, mom!” It took a few seconds for me to realize how disgusted I was. I don’t know what her mother was saying, but that simple phrase was said in a tone that angered me immediately.

Mom, if I ever spoke to you in such an irritable, ungrateful way, I’m sorry. There is little reason to speak like that to one’s mother.

P.S. …I’m going to see Big Bang in November…which means the wad of cash just got bigger. I am now keeping the credit card on lock-down.

XOXO
Gabby
